Art and the Environment Show 2005

Set to emphasize the deep environmental problems affecting Lake Simcoe at a time when the Ontario Government has undertaken a major study of Greenlands and natural areas in Southern Ontario and the Greater Toronto Area. Presently the “Places to Grow” study and future development management Act is proceeding. The Show is sponsored by the Zephyr Society of Lake Simcoe (website: zephyrsociety.ca).

The Art and the Environment Show is planned as a vitally important art and environmental event in northern York Region to inform the populace about the resilience and creativity of area residents and to point out the fragility of the natural environment we all depend on for our health and sustenance. The Art and the Environment Show is Saturday July 30, 12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m. It takes place at the Wilderness Places Gallery and the Studio located at 21003 Dalton Road, between Sutton and Jackson’s Point.

This show provides a stimulus for discussing our impact on the environment, and for reconnecting with the natural world around us. Environmental art uses the natural world as subject matter and even as a source of materials. As Henry Moore said “The observation of nature is part of an artist’s life, it enlarges his form-knowledge, keeps him fresh and from working only by formula, and feeds inspiration”.

Painters and sculptors in the show create works that inspire us to appreciate the beauty and complexity of nature. In some cases artists in the show working with natural stone materials, wood and smelted natural metals, by their work use and re-use natural materials and demonstrate a way of thinking and working in a sustainable manner. Artists Lindsay Howlett, Heather Rennie, Malcolm Madsen, Graham Ames, Todd Jamieson and Alfie Fishgap have been invited by Nature Artist and environmentalist Paul Harpley and are confirmed, to enhance the outdoor festival. Original drawings, paintings and sculpture of local landscapes and far away places are for show and sale. Also art objects made from materials of our everyday experience; sculpture, pottery, carvings, silver jewelry and “found art” can be viewed including original artwork by Canadian Aboriginal artists. The Show location at the Wilderness Places Gallery draws on Sutton and Jackson’s Point historical and natural heritage and connection to the Lake Simcoe shore. Meet the artists at the show and see and discuss their work.

The guest artists join Paul Harpley at his Wilderness Places Gallery and The Studio in exhibiting a wide ranging body of work with an environmental theme. They will be joined by environmentalists and naturalists with displays and information about the natural heritage of the Lake Simcoe area, its wildlife, geography and environmental challenges for the future. Special outdoor walks and hikes, talks and demonstrations are planned. See the following Schedule of Environmental Activities.

Come find out the current thinking and action related to the environment, art and sustainability in our community, meet some of the people involved and see the result of their work. Government Agencies like the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority and the Sibbald Point Provincial Park Interpretation Group and others will have displays and hand out information on their programs. Naturalists Groups, Community Conservation Associations, The Zephyr Society Research Program and other N.G.O.’s will be represented with members present to discuss issues and areas of interest.

Special parking arrangements have been made in the area. Admission is free and all are welcome. Special events and activities are planned.
